The Crosstown Tortoise

MR. ABE strolls the avenue at his own pace and arrives at every stop just as the delayed bus does, again and again down the whole route. The driver finally holds the doors open for him, and he waves the bus on.

The Down Escalator Summit

Rope coiled over one shoulder, young IMANI mountaineers up the down escalator, gaining no ground with total commitment. She plants a paper flag on the handrail just as the elevator beside her opens with a ding.

The Wedged Upright

Two piano movers wedge an upright piano at a perfect diagonal in the tram doors, and no push will budge it. Boarding passengers duck under it politely until one taps out a rising scale — and the piano slides free on the last note.

The Standing Room Cat

A cat sleeps across two seats of the packed evening train while commuters stack up in the aisle, none willing to wake it. The conductor strides down the carriage, stops, quietly straightens his cap, and steps past.

The Sideways Suitcase

One crooked wheel steers a rolling suitcase in wide, stately arcs across the terminal while its owner corrects course without looking up. The wheel finally straightens just as the pair glides to a stop at the lost luggage desk.
