On a mountain hut stove, a dented kettle steams while sleet ticks against the dark window. Morning breaks clear, and its steam climbs through a sunbeam above a valley gone perfectly white.

The Indigo Dye Yard

MASTER ODA hangs freshly dyed cloth across his riverside yard while morning mist still hides the far bank. Midday sun dries the lengths from near-black to living blue, and the yard becomes a corridor of sky.

The Noodle Shop Window

Before school, LINH wipes tables in her family's noodle shop while the street outside is still blue and empty. Steam fogs the big window, the first regulars stamp in from the cold, and the glass turns gold with the breakfast rush.

The Boatyard Varnish

Rain drums the shed roof of a fjord-side boatyard as a shipwright lays the season's last coat of varnish. When the clouds split at evening she rolls the hull out, and the wet wood holds the entire sunset.
